Clouer le bec

Literal Translation

To nail the beak

Actual Meaning

To shut someone up or leave them speechless

Etymology

Even though ‘clouer’ does mean to nail, it has nothing to do with nails… This is about ‘cloer’, the old form of ‘clore’, which of course means close.

Usually used when saying that a retort shut someone up, or that something left someone speechless.
