Etymology
We don’t really know where it started. There is the saying ‘les gonfler (à quelqu’un)’ (to inflate them (to someone)). In this case, ‘les’ implies what we imagine and what we know it implies… the same kind of thing as the expression ‘casser les couilles’ (to bust someone’s balls). But that’s not the only possible explanation.
Metaphorically speaking, we could also see it as an individual who is so ‘inflated’, annoyed by the excesses of another, that they are close to exploding with anger.
Furthermore, the verb ‘gonfler’ can also mean to exaggerate (when we say ‘gonfler son CV’, for example), and someone who annoys someone else to the point of pushing them over the edge is someone who exaggerates, takes things too far. Towards the end of the 19th century, ‘gonfler’ had already taken on a slang meaning of ‘to bore/annoy to death’. And if someone is boring us or annoying us, we tend to say “tu me gonfles!”.
