Literal Translation
Half-fig half-grape
Actual Meaning
Someone who is hot and cold, sometimes pleasant and sometimes not; also if someone has mixed feelings about something.
Etymology
Allegedly from the 14th century. During Lent, dried fruit were very popular, but raisins much more so than figs thanks to their sweeter and more refined (thanks to their higher cost) taste — vendors would even hide bits of fig in bags of raisings to trick customers. The fig’s slightly unfortunate shape may also have contributed to its unpopularity.
