From a famous 20th century case which captivated national news in France for a while. The owners of an inn in the Ardèche region, seemingly a perfectly lovely and honest couple, murdered their clients in their sleep and stole their possessions. No one suspected them for 20 years, instead blaming bandits or some gang-related actions. Eventually, a trap was set, they were caught, tried, and executed. The idiom made it into popular culture in the following years.
