A very worthwhile early start gave us a golden opportunity to have the entirety of the National Trust’s Hardcastle Crags to ourselves. Besides being one of Britain’s most beautiful bluebell woods at that time of year, it is also home to a bold young deer who kindly posed for me among the bluebells.
